We think 17-year-olds should have the right to vote in local elections. Here's why:
 
Civics lesson. If teens could vote, they would learn from parents and teachers about the skills that go into voting. The benefits of teaching teens to research issues and assess candidates' records would easily outweigh the cost of a few immature voters.
 
Attacking apathy. The past few decades have seen a steep decline in the political participation of young people. Voter turnout of 18- to 24-year-olds in presidential elections has dwindled to less than a third of registered voters. We think part of the problem has been the voting age. More...
 
Getting heard. Teens are one of the most regulated groups in the world. Because the law affects them so much, it makes sense for them to have a say in it. Lowering the voting age would give them the voice they deserve in their communities.
