BYOP | The council

The Council

The Council is an elected body that is responsible for all affairs of BYOP at the city-wide and chapter levels. It is responsible for making sure that BYOP is moving ahead on organization campaigns and trainings; attending and planning trainings; and leading retreats, weekly meetings, actions, and events. Each council member serves for 7 months (December to June) and is elected democratically by BYOP’s youth member base.

The Youth Council is made up of At-Large Chairs and Chapter Councilors. Each chapter elects its own Chapter Councilor to serve as a liaison between that chapter and the organization-wide level, and to lead the chapter meetings, campaigns, trainings, and actions. At-Large Councilors are elected by the entire BYOP membership at an annual election in the Fall, and coordinate the section of BYOP’s organizing for which they serve a position. The 2011 At-Large Position categories are Health, Safety, Education, and Transportation.

GiGiGerali Mateo
Youth Organizer

My name is Gerali Mateo. I am 17 years old and I’m a graduate from Dorchester Academy. I found out about BYOP because someone encouraged me to attend one of their city wide events. I had always been part of the student government of my school, but once I walked into BYOP, I saw another level of leadership beyond what I had ever seen before. Empowered by the good work the young people were doing, I felt the need to join them and do the same! I began to attend more meetings, and eventually became a Youth Organizer and also a member of the YOUNG Coalition. BYOP has become like my family, and I wouldn’t change that for anything!

LupeLuis Navarro
Youth Organizer

Wassup, my name is Luis Navarro and I’m 17 years old. I attend the Henderson K-12 Inclusion School. I came to BYOP through REEP and my sisters Katherine and Susi Castillo who were on the YC in 2011. I got elected in 2013 and have been on the Youth Council and Youth Organizing Team since. The reason I came to BYOP and became a member and a youth worker was because I was inspired and moved to fight for something that was bigger then myself. One main reason I joined BYOP to show other youth that their voices matter and they can do what i am doing.

IanIan McSorley
Youth Organizer

Hello. My name is Ian McSorley, I came to BYOP in the summer of 2014 because I wanted the experience of pure youth led organizing with some of my closest friends, and change the situations that were happening in my neighborhood. I’m one of the members on the youth organizing team, and we strive to get the schools and safety that our communities deserve.

All Youth Council members are elected democratically by their peers, and must meet qualifications including BYOP membership and involvement, leadership experience, and organizing skills in order to qualify as candidates.
